Sometimes just keeping it simple is enough. My process for these ink drawings (I’m still not sure what to term them…) is to frame up the area of the background that I think works best, then decide on the colour and type of mark to use on the foreground. This is usually based on the patterns or shapes in the background and how the additional marks will affect the composition. I felt that the vertical white stripes in this piece needed something in the top left corner to balance them out but I also wanted to oppose the lines rather than just add something similar. Hence the idea of dots, and once I’d started ‘dotting’, the square formation become obvious. Knowing when to stop can be just as important. Cmd-Z in analogue doesn’t work…
